1. Teaching methods of the teacher that I observed

In Ibu Nessa's class, the teaching method primarily centered around active learning, where she employed a variety of hands-on activities to engage her students fully. By incorporating group discussions, interactive exercises, and collaborative projects, she created an inclusive environment that encouraged participation and critical thinking. This approach not only kept the students interested but also fostered teamwork and communication skills, allowing them to apply theoretical concepts in practical contexts. Ibu Nessa's emphasis on active involvement helped students take ownership of their learning and reinforced the material in a memorable way.

2. Their learning materials and innovation

At SMKN4, a vocational school, the learning materials are crafted to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application, making education highly relevant to industry needs. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience, with modern labs and workshops that simulate real-world environments, providing students with the skills and confidence to transition smoothly into the workforce. Innovations in teaching include using multimedia resources, project-based learning, and collaboration with industry experts, which ensures that students are exposed to the latest tools, technologies, and practices in their fields. This forward-thinking approach not only equips students with technical expertise but also fosters adaptability and problem-solving skills essential for their future careers.

3. Other things that I enjoy observed

Moving from a traditional classroom setting in the Philippines to teaching in Indonesia has given me a richer perspective on the diverse needs of students. Here, I’ve come to understand that each student learns differently and requires various strategies to fully grasp lessons. In Indonesia, teaching goes beyond just talking at the front of the class; it demands interactive activities that engage students on multiple levels. Since some students may struggle with English comprehension, it’s crucial to blend hands-on activities, group work, and visual aids to support their understanding. This dynamic approach not only helps bridge language barriers but also creates an inclusive learning environment where every student has a chance to participate and succeed.

4.Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers

Teachers at SMKN 4 use a mix of digital platforms, industry-specific software, hands-on tools, and practical resources tailored to each vocational department to enhance learning. In software engineering, educators incorporate programming tools and collaborative platforms like GitHub for project management, while the tourism department utilizes digital booking systems and hospitality management software. Fashion and cosmetics teachers rely on design software, digital styling tools, and industry-standard machinery for garment construction and beauty techniques. Culinary instructors use both virtual and in-kitchen learning, teaching students with recipe databases, kitchen management software, and live cooking demonstrations. This blend of technology and hands-on resources equips students with skills directly relevant to their respective fields.

5.Authentic assessment used by the teachers

Based on what I observe at SMKN 4, teachers use authentic assessments tailored to the practical and theoretical demands of each vocational department, including software engineering, tourism, fashion, culinary, and cosmetics. These assessments focus on real-world tasks to evaluate students' skills and knowledge in contexts that mirror industry settings. For example, students in software engineering are assessed through project-based assignments, such as developing applications, while tourism students might guide mock tours. Culinary students are tested through meal preparation and presentation, fashion students through garment design and production, and cosmetics students through client makeup and styling. This approach ensures students are not only learning but also applying skills in ways that prepare them for their specific career paths.
